Le narrateur est un aviateur qui, à la suite d'une panne de moteur, a dû se poser en catastrophe dans le désert du Sahara et tente seul de réparer son avion. Le lendemain de son atterrissage forcé, il est réveillé par une petite voix qui lui demande : " S'il vous plaît... dessine-moi un mouton ! " Jour après jour, le petit prince raconte son histoire au narrateur. Il vit sur une autre planète, l'astéroïde B612, " à peine plus grande qu'une maison ". Les activités du petit prince consistent essentiellement à ramoner les volcans et à couper les baobabs pour qu'ils n'envahissent pas sa planète. Après ces activités, le petit prince va contempler un coucher de soleil; son astéroïde est si petit qu'il lui suffit de déplacer sa chaise de quelques mètres pour cela : pas besoin d'aller loin pour trouver le bonheur.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry est un écrivain, poète, aviateur et reporter français. En 1939, il sert dans l'armée de l'air, affecté à une escadrille de reconnaissance aérienne. À l'armistice de juin 1940, il quitte la France pour New York avec l'objectif de faire entrer les États-Unis dans la guerre et devient l'une des voix de la Résistance. Rêvant d'action, il rejoint enfin, au printemps 1944, une unité chargée de reconnaissances photographiques en vue du débarquement de Provence. Il disparaît en mer avec son avion, un lors de sa mission du 31 juillet 1944. Il est déclaré " mort pour la France ". Le Petit Prince, écrit à New York pendant la guerre, est un conte philosophique, empreint à la fois de légèreté et de pessimisme vis-à-vis de la nature humaine, devient très vite un immense succès mondial.
