The arrival of AI is a dreaded and formidable confrontation, but in any case, it overturns the status of the photographic image. This book starts from an artistic reflection on documentary creation in the age of AI, and also questions the way in which screens, screen photography and the photographic screen constitute an aesthetic in their own right. -

Jane Campion on Jane Campion offers a unique perspective on the creative process of one of the greatest contemporary film directors, through a series of interviews from the early days of Campion's career to her most recent projects, conducted by Michel Ciment. Each chapter contains the study of a film, starting with the short films that Campion made during her film studies at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and ending with her last film, The Power of the Dog. A biographical study and a general essay place her work in context.
Organized chronologically, film by film, the interviews are illustrated by film stills and photographs taken on set, annotated scripts, storyboards and personal documents lent by Campion.
The book also reproduces three short stories and a text about the poet John Keats written by the director, along with actress Holly Hunter's `Scattered Memories' of their collaboration on The Piano and Top of the Lake. A detailed bibliography and a filmography of the filmmaker complete this reference work, which contains more than 300 colour and black-and-white images.
MICHEL CIMENT, coordinator of the French film magazine Positif, has been a contributor to the French radio programme Le Masque et la Plume (France Inter) since 1970 and produced Projection privée for the radio station France Culture for 26 years. Senior Lecturer Emeritus in American Civilization at Paris Diderot University, he is also the author of some 30 books about the cinema, including Kubrick, Kazan on Kazan, Conversations with Losey, Film World: interviews with cinema's leading directors and Boorman (British Film Institute Prize).
The Power of the Dog was awarded Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice. The film also won 3 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture in Drama, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
The first French edition of this book was awarded a prize for the best film book by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics.

The hitherto unpublished Dirk Bogarde - the best of his marvellous letters
The success of John Coldstream's bestselling biography of Dirk Bogarde demonstrates that the interest in one of Britain's leading actors, memoirists and novelists does not diminish, even though it is a decade since his death. Bogarde was a secretive man, who destroyed many of his own papers and diaries. Fortunately, the recipients of his letters treasured them, enabling John Coldstream to bring together this fascinating collection of hitherto unpublished material.
Bogarde wrote to each correspondent according to the nature of the friendship, but invariably he was frank, gossipy, funny and often malicious. The joy of writing, particularly as he grew older and chose to live in France, was never far away. The letters display the qualities familiar to those who knew the private Bogarde: acute observation, laser-like intelligence, impatience with the foolish, compassion for the needy, a relish for the witty metaphor, and a catastrophic disdain for correct spelling and punctuation. Above all, to read his letters is to hear him talk, and no conversation with Dirk Bogarde was dull. Recipients included the film director Joseph Losey, Bogarde's first publisher Norah Smallwood, the film critic Dilys Powell, and the novelist Penelope Mortimer. -

The first in-depth look at one of today's fastest rising stars! Natalie Portman is only 20 years old, but already she has co-starred in nine motion pictures with everyone from Woody Allen to Al Pacino to Julia Roberts. Critics in the know consider her the best young actress in America.
Dickerson's engaging biography examines the charm and wit of Portman's professional persona, while revealing the emotional life of the real Portman. From her relationship with her successful - and demanding - parents, to her modeling career and her early acting roles, from her life at Harvard to her breathtaking performance in Star Wars, Dickerson illuminates Portman's influences and ambitious dreams.
The biography discusses Natalie's long relationship with Britney Spears and their parallel, albeit drastically different, careers. It also goes behind-the-scenes of Natalie's successes - Star Wars, The Professional - and her failures - the screen kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio that caused producers to drop her from the cast of Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Dickerson speaks with Portman's Harvard classmates, revealing the intrigue that surrounded her arrival at the prestigious university. The intimate details of Natalie Portman's life have always been closely guarded secrets. Dickerson also delves into her personal life and tells the story that, until now, has not been told.

Dirk Bogarde ; The Authorised Biography
John Coldstream
- Weidenfeld & Nicolson
- 8 Septembre 2011
- 9781780221748
'Biographies only tend to be definitive until the next one comes along, but there's no danger of Coldstream's erudite, moving analysis ever being superseded' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY.
As an actor Dirk Bogarde was a Rank contract artist and matinee idol who became a giant of the intellectual cinema, working on films such as Death in Venice, The Servant and Providence. Fiercely protective of his privacy, and that of his partner of 40 years, he left England in the 1960s to live abroad, where he carved a second career for himself as a bestselling author. Although Bogarde destroyed many of his papers, John Coldstream has had unique access to his personal archives and to friends and family who knew him well. The result is a fascinating biography of a complex and intriguing personality. -

Though the number of works on cultural diplomacy is in general quite substantial, very few concern the production and distribution of films. The cinemas established by French cultural institutions are likewise virtually absent from many studies on the history of cinema, and notably from those on its theaters. By analyzing the distribution systems of French and world cinema which promote local production, and their audiences, all the analyses presented in the book establish an initial assessment on the life of cinemas belonging to the Instituts français and the Alliances françaises. First spaces of French culture's unilateral influence, then windows onto "cultural diversity," the history of these theaters is certainly complex. We preferred to approach it and render it with all of its contradictions.
